Placement assessment

Privacy notice

How this site handles personal information for placement tests and tutoring (South Africa: POPIA).

Who is responsible

the tutor who gave you your access code. This person runs the tests and the tutoring and is responsible for the information.

What is stored

No ID numbers or payment details are asked. The site uses one cookie, only to keep the teacher or a tutored student logged in; there is no advertising or tracking.

Why

To find out what the learner already knows (placement) and, for tutored students, to plan lessons, set homework and tests, and track progress. The information is not used for anything else and is not sold.

If the tutor uses the optional "tailor this summary" button, the topic name and anonymous results (scores, and the text of a few questions answered wrongly) are sent to Google's Gemini service to draft a revision note. Names, school and contact details are never sent.

Who sees it

The teacher, after logging in with a password. Placement test marks and reports are seen only by the teacher. A tutored student sees their own schedule, homework, test results and progress after logging in, and nobody else's.

Where it is kept

On a rented server in the European Union (Hetzner, in Germany or Finland), reached over an encrypted (https) connection. Daily backup copies are kept on the same server for 30 days.

How long

Until the teacher deletes it. We recommend deleting a learner's information after 24 months at the latest; the teacher can switch on automatic deletion.

Your rights

A learner or parent may ask to see the information, to correct it, or to have it deleted. Contact the tutor who gave you your access code. Deleted information is removed permanently (daily backup copies are replaced within 30 days). You may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
